Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a brain disorder that affects the mental abilities including memory, language, and cognition. Slowly, it leads to dementia and death. This usually arises in late middle age or the elderly but there is a rare familiar subtype that may occur earlier. It is quite different from mild forgetfulness normally observed in older people. Over the course time, the people with Alzheimer's no longer recognize themselves or much about the world around them.
Because AD is so well-known, the other causes of dementia or memory loss are overlooked. Other possible diagnoses include normal aging (if very mild symptoms), emotional problems, fatigue, depression, and certain medical conditions such as thyroid disease, brain tumors, multi-infarct disease, or Huntington's disease. In its early stages, a correct diagnosis of AD can also be overlooked itself and misdiagnosed as other conditions such as depression, dementia, simple forgetfulness, or senility.
AD is a progressive disease. Its course varies from person to person. Some people have the disease only for the last 5 years of life, while others may have it for as many as 20 years. The most common cause of death in AD patients is infection.
The main aim of clinical trials, also known as clinical studies, is to recognize whether the experimental medication is effective and safe, or not. This experimentation must go through a series of clinical trials to prove that it is a safe and effective treatment for a particular medical condition. Clinical trials may be either small or large, having just few or thousands of participants. Clinical trials are conducted by qualified doctors who are responsible for the care and well being of the participants.
