Clinical Trials For Obesity

Obesity is nothing but an increase in the body weight more than that needed for normal function that is characterized by the accumulation of excessive fat. It is said to have a Body Mass Index of 30 or greater. Usually, it is caused by consuming more calories then the body is able to break down. It refers to being more than 20% over the desirable weight. Even though, some obesity is caused by underlying disorders, while the main cause is probably lifestyle.

Clinical trial is nothing but the research study performed to improve the overall patient health and care. Each of the trial includes processing supervised tests to determine the effectiveness and safety of new drugs, procedures and/or devices to answer the scientific questions about a disease or condition. The risks and side-effects are also evaluated during these trials with results can be unpleasant, with side effects such as headaches, to more serious or even life-threatening risks. A clinical trial is divided into phases, or steps, with each phase designed to answer a separate research question. This maybe reflected in the trial name.

Each phase does the following job :
• Phase I: Designed to check the safety, determine a safe dosage range and identify side effects on a small group of patients.
• Phase II: Conducted if Phase I is successful, then the trial is repeated with a larger group to check its effect and safety.
• Phase III: Trials are done on an ever larger group and compared with the best current treatment while gathering more information on effect and safety.
• Phase IV: The studies monitor long-term side effects after the treatment has been marketed.
